Hope Health’s new Quick-Reads brochures set standard for Plain Language health communications

Kalamazoo, Mich. – A leader in easy-to-read health and lifestyle content, Hope Health has taken a major step toward setting industry standards for Plain Language publications. Launching in November is a new line of health brochures certified to be written and designed according to Plain Language guidelines.

“Americans struggle to make sense of health information. So we have taken our award-winning brochure line through a process to make them even quicker to read and easier to understand,” said Hope Health President Shawn Connors.

Why Plain Language? Because people still ask questions: How much exercise do I need? Should the HDL cholesterol be high or low? Is meat a good fat or a bad fat? Should I pay attention to calories or carbs? Is a blood pressure of 140/80 too high?

Even the best information won’t help answer these questions if health communications are not written to be understood.

The biggest barrier to being healthy is not age, income, education, race, ethnicity, or gender, according to government reports. It’s a person’s ability to understand and use health information. And only 12% of Americans could be rated as “proficient” in understanding much of the health information available today.

Plain Language speaks to everyone. Text is written clearly. Graphics are used when a picture can replace a thousand words. Terms are explained, and medical jargon is not used at all.

Plain Language is perfect for everyone at all reading levels because it takes less time to “get the message.” They know on first reading what to do and how to make a meaningful lifestyle change, according to Connors.

To deliver their brand-new line of certified, trademarked Quick-Read brochures, Hope Health has partnered with one of the country’s leading health literacy and Plain Language firms, Plain Language Works, LLC.

The Quick-Read brochures cover ever-popular topics such as Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Colds and Flu, Handling Stress, and many, many more.
