At the beginning of the year I asked coaches in the Wellcoaches community to submit a list of 10 ways in which they want to thrive in 2009. Diane is dealing with some challenging health issues and asked me for a series of coaching sessions designed to improve her health and life satisfaction. [Note that Diane's first session occurred in 2009.]
I see the coaching conversation as comprised of three parts: the warm up, the workout, and the cool down. Diane’s first session with me could be described as a “warm up” for the mental workout ahead.
When it comes to a physical workout, it was previously believed that a static warm up (slowly extending and stretching muscles) was beneficial. However, we now know that the most effective warm up should instead include light aerobic activity to increase body heat and blood flow. When we warm muscles in this way, we use store muscle fuel more effectively and are better able to withstand the load. Similarly, in Diane’s “warm up” conversation, we “got the blood flowing” right away through the exploration of topics that would support her in being stronger moving forward.
We began by discussing the best things already happening with Diane’s health and well-being. She was quick to recognize that she is:
• Spiritually strong
• Emotionally balanced
• At a healthy weight
• Resilient through pain
• A recovering “Type A” personality
• Honoring healthy daily routines
Diane also noted that her strengths include strong intuition, a positive outlook, and the ability to communicate her thoughts through writing.
It is the reinforcement of these strengths and positive habits that will enable Diane to achieve her vision:
To be in a state of health with sufficient energy and vitality that enables me to support myself in all realms – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial – and that enables me to explore and pursue my life’s mission.
At the end of our conversation, I asked Diane if she would be willing to write an “A Letter.” She was to write the letter as if it were April 2010 and she was awarding herself the grade of an “A” for being at her best during the next year.
Stay tuned for Diane’s response and excitement as she dreams about what is to come….
