Creating Your Wellness Vision

In our coaching session, Cindy created a powerful wellness vision:

To eat and enjoy food fully while feeling calm and free which would allow me to not overeat.

In creating a concrete and motivating picture, Cindy has greater potential to feel more alive, better about herself, and more enthusiastic about her relationships and her work.

A wellness vision acts as a guide, defining:

Best self - Who do I want to be when it comes to health, fitness, and wellness?
Behaviors - What do I want to do consistently that is aligned with my best self - exercise regularly; eat well; relax more; take medications as prescribed...?
Outcomes - What do I want to have happen as a result - weight loss; more strength; better energy; greater fitness; less stress; more peace of mind?
Motivators - Why does this matter to me - do I want to feel better; be healthier; improve my quality of life?

Organizations have been aware of the benefit of having a clear purpose for many years. They understand that, with a purpose, all of its systems (people, processes, and policies) can be organized around that vision. And, they know that if you're aiming for nowhere, you'll be sure to get there!

For example, a large investment firm went to great expense in terms of time and energy to be sure that everyone, from the CEO to the building maintenance team, could recite the organization's vision with passion and commitment.

The result? The firm spends virtually nothing on advertising. Their associates know the story and tell it, often. And, knowing the vision positively influences the choices of everyone within the organization - they are proud to represent it in everything that they do, wanting to be seen as congruent and having integrity.

A personal wellness vision can have much the same impact. When you create a clearer awareness of what you want, it becomes easier to take actions that support those dreams. And, when your systems (people, habits, environments) in your life are informed of your desires, they are better able to support you in doing so.

This week, consider: What is your greatest wish regarding your own wellness? What if everyone in your life knew your wellness vision? How could they support you in achieving it?

Next week, I'll share a few ideas for creating a wellness vision to get you motivated and moving...
