Susan is thriving with Stage 4 cancer and is on a journey to live her purpose, focusing on her being rather than her doing.
The “Wheel of Life”
In our second coaching session, Susan expressed a desire to gain clarity about her own life’s purpose, beginning by naming those things that bring her fulfillment. Last week, I introduced you to a tool, “The Wheel of Life”, which you can use to identify your own values and principles for living.
Making Meaning of the Wheel
Now that you have listed your own values - words or phrases on
the wheel -, it’s time to reflect more deeply about the extent to which those values are being reflected in your own life. To do this, I encourage you to use a “ruler”, using a scale of 0-10, with 10 being the highest. Regarding each of your values, ask yourself, “On a scale of 0-10, to what extent am I experiencing this value? And, how well is this value being honored in my life right now?”
For example, if you named “Spirituality” as one of your values, consider the extent to which spirituality is a part of your life. If you feel it’s a key focus on a daily basis, you might choose a “10”. On the other hand, if you feel spirituality absent from your life, you might choose a “0” – or some number in between.
Create a Picture
As you consider these questions for each of the values, it is helpful to represent that number on your graphic wheel and then “connect the dots” between each area. You’ll see an example of how you might do this
here. This graphic will represent your “Wheel of Life”.
What About Your Wheel?
Lastly, set aside some time to reflect on the following questions:
• If this wheel were taking you on your journey through life, how would the ride be? Smooth? Bumpy? Jolting?
• Which value brings you a sense of pride? Joy?
• Which value do you wish you could have given a “10”? Why ?
• How do each of your values impact and influence one another?
• What would it take to move your lowest rating up by one number?
• How might this new understanding of yourself influence the choices you make this week?
