Susan is thriving with Stage 4 cancer and is on a journey to live her purpose, focusing on her being rather than her doing.
The “Wheel of Life”
In our second coaching session, Susan expressed a desire to gain clarity about her own life’s purpose, beginning by naming those things that bring her fulfillment. In our conversation, she mentioned a tool that is often used by coaches called the “Fulfillment Wheel”, or “Wheel of Life”. The “Wheel of Life” is one way to graphically represent your values and to gain a snapshot view of their role in your life.
What’s On Your Wheel?
To create your own “Wheel of Life” you’ll need a piece of paper and a pen/pencil. Now, draw a large circle in the center of the paper. Next, divide that circle into 6 parts – we’ll call these “slices.”
Here is an image of a blank wheel for reference. You’ll notice that, in the image, one of the lines is also numbered. It is not necessary for you to do that; however, note that you will be imagining that those numbers exist as we move through the exercise next week.
What’s Important to You?
The next step is to consider the following questions:
What do I value most in the world? What motivates me to be at my best? What inspires me to thrive? What guides my decisions?
These questions are designed to encourage you to think about your principles or values. Examples of words that might resonate with you:
spirituality, ambition, competency, individuality, equality, service, responsibility, respect, diversity, enjoyment/fun, loyalty, honesty, innovation, excellence, dignity, collaboration, stewardship, empathy, accomplishment, courage, wisdom, independence, security, challenge, influence, learning, compassion, friendliness, discipline/order, generosity, persistence, optimism, dependability, flexibility.
Of course, this is just a sampling of words; it’s more important to choose words or phrases that have meaning to you. Once you’ve decided upon the six words or phrases that have meaning to you, record one in each of the six “slices” of the circle.
This is the first step in creating your own “Wheel of Life”. Next week, I’ll invite you to continue the process…
