At the beginning of the year I asked coaches in the Wellcoaches community to submit a list of 10 ways in which they want to thrive in 2009. Diane is dealing with some challenging health issues and asked me for a series of coaching sessions designed to improve her health and life satisfaction.

In response to our first coaching session, Diane wrote a powerful letter called an "A Letter."

Here is your opportunity to set the stage for living into your possibility. Take on the challenge of writing your own “A Letter” today! Here’s how:

Your First Letter
In this exercise, write a letter to yourself dated one year from today. Describe with such enthusiasm the person you will have become that you fall in love with yourself. Give a snapshot of your transformed self in terms of the activities you are engaging in, your feelings and attitude, your posture, appearance, and spirit. Write the letter entirely in the present and past tenses, unfolding your life from this moment forward as though the year had already happened. Write about each barrier you overcame, and how you did it, and describe what support you elicited from others such that you became the happy successful person you describe.

Your Second Letter
The next phase is to take this same principle to the five‐year mark. Write a second letter dated five years from today following the same guidelines, including how you have sustained your weight, health, self‐image, and lifestyle. Have fun boasting about how heroically you overcame each devilish temptation, stress, and disappointment that life threw at you. Describe temporary setbacks and how you rallied. Write about any new structures you put in place to give you strength, including any changes you made in your environment, any new relationships you formed, and any new goals and incentives you developed.

Above all, remember that the “A” is not an expectation to be lived up to, but a possibility to be lived into.
