Birgitt Acts As If...Birgitt's Commentary

Listen to Coach Meg and Birgitt here

After our last session reviewing my character strengths you gave me some insight into how I can use them to keep me calm and focused in these events.

I put my best self to the test while attending my last three networking events. It was helpful for me in our session to identify what actions I could take to get me comfortable networking while wearing my coaching hat.

The first event I went to was a happy hour at a chocolate bar - now who would miss that! Before I went in to the event I took a few minutes to address my mindset and review my strengths. I visualized myself looking at all the people and seeing their smiling faces. I thought about how fun the people were to be around. I imagined myself interacting and staying focused on listening to them.

When I walked in the door, I smiled and scanned the room. Then, I thought one good thing about each person I made eye contact with. I introduced myself and proceeded to ask what they did and talked about how coaching could fit into their organization. Reviewing how I chose to show up made all the difference in the world. When I started to feel uncomfortable I kept seeing myself as calm, relaxed, and having a smile on my face.

The last two events were networking groups that I attend weekly. I again visualized how I wanted to look, feel and talk when I spoke. I reviewed my character strengths, envisioned myself walking in the door and having fun talking about what I do as a coach. Right before my turn to do my introduction, I reminded myself to talk slowly, have fun, and look at each person.

The good news - I got great feedback and even got my first client referral during the meeting! It is all about how I chose to show up. If I see myself as a successful business woman, and use my strengths in areas that are challenging, it gives me a new perspective.

Coach Meg, I knew something was getting in my way. It was great to review my strengths and learn to use them. I hit a home run! I have many more events to attend and I am confident that I can work through my uneasiness now.

How wonderful Birgitt! Thanks for the update! Next week we'll continue our exploration of the value of "acting as if" in our own lives...
