Session synopsis by Coach Meg
Laura's relationship with Coach Meg began a few months ago when she was looking for a support system for her weight loss goal. (Click here to listen to previous sessions with Laura -
Session One and
Session Two.)
In this session we planned to focus on how Laura can harness her character strengths, which Laura identified by taking the on-line assessment at
www.authentichappiness.com. Character strengths are traits which are natural strengths, and also strengths with which we feel a heartfelt connection. While we have many strengths, those aligned with our most closely-held values are our greatest resource for reaching goals that lead to happiness. Laura's character strengths are Curiosity, Fairness and Equity, Wisdom, Spirituality and Appreciation for Beauty.
In reviewing how her strengths are being applied in her work and personal life, we began to notice a discrepancy. Laura easily identified ways that her strengths come to life in her work - as both a coach and a Nia instructor (Nia is a mind-body-spirit fitness program which incorporates dance, martial arts, and the healing arts.)
For example, looking at the strength described as "Appreciation for Beauty," Laura recognized how quickly she appreciates what is beautiful about her clients. But, she noted, it was harder to think of ways she used her strengths with her teenage son.
So, in her home life, Laura discovered an opportunity to use her strengths more intentionally with her son by paying attention to and acknowledging what she appreciates about him.
And, perhaps her most important realization was that it is possible for both Laura and her son to have their needs met - and even to come to a meeting of the minds about house chores!
Laura concluded that the key to a harmonious house is to bring the same skills she uses in coaching into her relationship with her son. She committed to take action by asking her son if he would be willing to assess his own character strengths. From there, she hopes they will begin to create a "wellness vision" for their relationship together.
We'll look forward to hearing from Laura next week as she shares her thoughts on the experience...
