Laura Reveals A Secret

2009/01/21: Wellness
Session synopsis by Coach Meg

Laura was the first volunteer to work with me as Coach Meg (link to first session) and while this blog is not meant to replicate nor replace a complete coaching partnership, we were both interested in a second session.

Laura shared that she's hired a life coach and feels happy with her progress toward weight loss, including a step backward before another step forward. And though weight loss matters, her goal is really about optimal wellness - letting her spirit shine through and feeling good about what she sees in herself.

Coaching sessions are often compared to the process of peeling the layers off of an onion, and a new layer was revealed in the second session. Laura's desire to kick her smoking habit emerged, something she was uncomfortable about sharing. With a strong desire to live in integrity as a wellness professional, Laura courageously decided to put it on the table, while acknowledging she feels ashamed about taking up smoking in recent months.

She is in an early stage of considering quitting - what behavioral psychologists call the "contemplation" stage of readiness which feels like sitting on a fence. Breaking bad habits is hard work - and smoking is particularly hard because it has significant rewards along with the underlying physical and psychological addiction.

We explored all the good things about smoking so that Laura would honor the benefits and be more likely to accept herself as she is today. Next we explored all of the bad things about smoking. Then Laura began to formulate a plan to quit.

In the next blog Laura will share more of her journey and shine the light on the shadows. Stay tuned...
