Segment 1Segment 2Segment 3 As successful as Karen is in most areas of her life, she continued to struggle to lose weight. Finding temptation a daily challenge, she was frustrated by her lack of "personal discipline" to "get the job done." So, we began by not tackling the problem at all. Though it's tempting to wrestle with all that is "wrong" and try to figure out how to fix it, coaching follows a different and more powerful path.
Crafting a Wellness Vision The reasons we want to change, once named and explored, are usually far more compelling than the reasons we can't. And, that is where I began with Karen. First she created a picture of her ideal wellness and the reasons the ideal vision matters to her at a deep level. While our first instinct is often to just start getting into action by setting goals, it's important first to establish a vision and one's higher purpose for being well.
A Wellness Vision is a compelling statement of who you are at your best level of well-being and what life and health-promoting behaviors you want to be doing consistently to get you there.
The Components of a Vision - Part One Over the next three blogs/weeks, I will share the process that I have found to be effective when creating a Wellness Vision. This week, we begin with the 50,000 foot view; questions that look at the "what" and "why" of the vision and create energy in doing so.
Following are questions to consider in crafting your own Wellness Vision:
* What does your vision look like? Imagine the picture. What would you look and feel like at your ideal level of wellness/well-being? What kind of person do you want to be when it comes to your wellness?
* When have your felt this way before? What are the times in your life when you felt at your best level of wellness? * What do you value most about who you are already?
* What makes this vision really important to you? Why do you really want to reach this vision? What good will come from your doing so?
Clearly, these are not small questions. Set aside uninterrupted time to reflect on them, either in a journal or with a supportive person. Be thoughtful here; you are building the foundation for your future success.
Next week, I'll share more questions and the next step...
