One of the most important ways coaches support clients is by helping them identify ways to make latent dreams a reality. Coaches help clients put their dreams into words and then translate those words into action.

Karen has several dreams: first, to continue a healthy balance between business and home life and invest in great relationships; and for the future, to be 15 kilos lighter and healthier, enabling her to pursue new adventures and live her full potential.

As a cancer survivor, celebrating life has risen high as a priority. And while that supports Karen's emotional wellness, it doesn't always benefit her physical wellness when she chooses to say "yes" to delightful food and drink in the enjoyable company of family, friends, and colleagues.

Karen described that what stands between her and optimal health is personal discipline. Yet, when we talked about areas of success in her life, she noted her ability to be disciplined in developing her successful career. She "gets the job done" with authority and energetic inspiration.

So, we explored how Karen might think about discipline in a new way, by considering how she could "get the job (of eating wisely with less snacking and drinking) done" after-hours.

Putting the challenge of her temptations in perspective, Karen realized that saying "no" to offerings of food and drink would take less than one minute (ten "no's" each taking 5 seconds) during an evening, leaving the rest of the time to celebrate and enjoy. She discovered, "Eating too much will not determine whether or not I have a great night out, but it will determine how I feel about myself the next day," and saw how she could stay focused on "getting it done" instead.

In the end, Karen found a way to make her vision possible through the setting of shorter-term attainable goals. In the coming weeks, I'll explain how you can do the same.

But first, next week, we hear from Karen about how she got the job done...
